So far my summer has been fairly quiet and so it was a bit of a shock for me last week as I spent most of the hours of my days helping out with the IScience summer school. I decided a while back that I was going to volunteer as I had helped out last year and had really enjoyed it. The summer school ran from Monday to Friday and involved lots of Year 12 students joining us in our lovely department for a while. We ran all sorts of activities with them from lectures to labs to a trip to the National Space Centre!
It was nice as I got to sit in on a lot of the lectures (even if I had seen a lot of them before!) as well as actually giving some presentations and helping teach the students in the labs. The best part however was talking to the enthusiastic students that wanted to know all they could about the course and natural science courses in higher education. I love my course and so it was lovely to let people know just how much! It was also nice to be able to try and answer some of their more general questions about University life which I hope at least some of them found helpful.
The days were pretty packed but in the end I enjoyed the week a lot even if I was rather worn out by it all. I just hope our summer school students got as much out of the week as I did!
