While I very much enjoy my course, it’s nice to be home with my family. My parents are two of my best friends, and so holidays for me are times to hang out and have fun. Since I’m no longer at home full-time, it’s become even more important for me that I make the most of the time I do have here. As a result, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I make my family feel appreciated and loved, to try and give back some of the support that they’ve showered me with over the last four years.
Strangely enough, this time I’ve found that I’ve mainly given love back through sorting. Both of my parents work full-time jobs, and my brother isn’t very good at sorting and organising, so things have tended towards entropy while I’ve been gone. I spent a day sorting out under the sink (well, five hours, but it felt like more), spent a while this morning measuring the utensil drawer so I can sort that out, and have been generally looking out for projects to tackle. Not exactly restful, and certainly not fun, but I like to give something back to the household.
Another way I give back love, specifically to my Mom, is by cleaning the kitchen before I go to bed. She hates coming downstairs and having the first thing she sees be a messy kitchen. Since I’m being semi-nocturnal at the moment, I’m the last person up. So I do a quick whizz around the kitchen; unload and load the dishwasher, wipe down the sides, put things away that have been left out, that sort of thing.
It’s small stuff, sure, but it’s small stuff that keeps me feeling like an actual part of the family. Sometimes it’s hard being at uni and knowing that I’m missing a lot of family life back home – while many people my age seem eager to throw off family connections to make their own life, I’m still happy with living at home and having my family around. At least I still have various holidays to catch up.
How do you give love back to the important people in your life? If you haven’t done anything today, do something now. Yes, now. Hug a friend. Send a text to your mother. Email a funny internet video to a sibling or significant other. Send some love!
