In the spirit of good music, I thought I’d title my post tonight under the names of one of my favourite songs – if you’ve not heard it, have a listen and tell me what you think. I saw The Libertines last August at Reading Festival 2010 and I thought they were just marvellous. They started their set by playing a montage of photos with Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ echoing across the area, with thousands of fans standing transfixed and slightly nervous as to whether Pete Doherty would show up or not – I can confirm, he did!
Anyway, the reason for the title this week is because last Friday I was fortunate enough to meet one of my heroes – right in the middle of the University of Leicester Student’s Union!!!! It was, I will admit, one of the strangest but best experiences of my life.
On Friday 4th November, Alex James, internationally recognised songwriter, journalist, presenter of Never Mind the Buzzcocks (a particular favourite of mine) and of course, his little side project, BEING THE BASSIST OF BLUR, was in our Student’s Union! Why was he there, I hear you ask? One of his already established talents?
No! He was there to sell cheese!
As it turns out, since his Blur days, Alex James has gone all domestic and has purchased a farm and has started making his own line of cheeses! So, in the middle of the busy Student’s Union, he set up a stall, complete with free samples of his cheese on toast, his cheese in cubes and his cheese melted in little pots with minature baked potatoes. I tried a bit of each, and it was actually delicious! The special cheese served with the baked potatoes, you just put in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and then you could literally POUR it on to the potato!
He also was showcasing some of his new line ‘Alex James presents….’ (which I think is being sold at Asda very soon) for very low prices (£1 for a massive block! Bargain!) for anyone who wanted to take any home – I bought some ‘Tikka Masala’ chedder for my Dad’s birthday – but shhh, don’t tell him!
So yes, at the University of Leicester anything is possible… wander into the Student’s Union to get a coffee and end up meeting one of your heroes and getting a free lunch from him. Amazing.
