Today was the beginning of the annual Freshers Fair at the University of Leicester. The University Campus was filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of excited and enthused freshers stocking up on the many freebies that are distributed to anyone that walks past. It can be rather overwhelming when you walk past all of these amazing societies and feel inclined (in all the excitement) to join them all. Thus, I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some tips for surviving Freshers Fair!
1. Firstly, take one circuit around the stalls without signing up to any societies but taking the chance to pick up all the freebies that catch your eye. Also use this time to ask the executive members questions about what the society does/what events it will be holding throughout the year.
2. Having completed that circuit, you will probably have some sort of an idea of the societies/groups that you want to join so make sure that you sign up to them!
3. One word of warning is to make sure you are aware of how many societies you sign up to… otherwise you will be inundated with a great amount of emails in your inbox.
4. Remember, even though you have signed up, it may not mean that you are automatically a member. The standard price for an annual membership to a society costs about £3-4. At the University of Leicester, you have to pay online so don’t forget to do this. Also, there may be some special membership offers/discounts if you join during the Freshers Week period so do ask the representatives at the stalls to find out more.
5. I would recommend to all students to join their course society, mainly because it will give you a chance to get to know your course mates more and may have some amazing opportunities lined up that could be really helpful for you.
I have really enjoyed being a part of many societies at the University of Leicester. My favourite ones at the moment are, of course, UNICEF on Campus and the Law Society.
