Having studied Law for nearly 3 years now, its inevitable that you start (if you already haven’t) becoming more and more aware of politics and the government. So on Thursday night, I, like many others, sat down to watch the massively hyped debate between David Cameron and Ed Miliband.
I was honestly expecting it to resemble the playground shenanigans that we saw the previous day in the House of Commons opposed to the composed and controlled behaviour we saw. Then again, with the fierce Jeremy Paxman there to grill them, I suppose they had to be!
Some of you may wonder, why on earth would a Law student be interested in politics?
Well, to some extent, I feel that a Law student has to take an interest with the latest issues and discussions because it could have an profound effect on the legal system.
You might be surprised to know, since I started my degree in October 2012, the UK has already seen a Scottish referendum, the enactment of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 as well as endless discussions related to EU with a referendum potentially taking place very soon.
In a short space of time, you can clearly see some of the effects and issues there have been with regards to Constitutional and Administrative law, Family law, EU law and I am certain there have been so many more in other fields.
The next few years are going to be extremely interesting to see when it comes to the developments with the law. So, my top tip for all you budding Law students is to try and keep up to date with the main political stories in the news.
Did any of you catch the Debate? If you did, let me know what you think by commenting below!
Until next time,
