Here I am, in the middle of the night, still revising for my exams that begin next week. I must admit that the past month has been incredibly testing with revision proving to be as challenging and difficult as you would imagine. There have been a few occasions (when trying to memorise all the cases and principles related to mens rea in criminal law) where in the heat of the moment I simply wonder in exasperation, ‘why on earth am I studying law!?’
Then, whilst I’m having my break, watching the news about a recent conviction of gross negligence manslaughter, I remember that I understand exactly why criminal liability is imposed because I have studied ‘Criminal Law’.
Similarly, I was able to understand the process and all the main issues surrounding the recent Parliamentary Elections due to the fact that I studied ‘Constitutional and Administrative Law’ in my first year and learnt all about the legislative process and issues surrounding devolution.
I could honestly go on and on, and give you countless more examples of how the study of Law has made me see the world in a different way where I am, now, more aware and able to understand issues that can profoundly affect us all. For example, with a referendum concerning the continued membership with the EU looming on the horizon, I know that I will be able to make an informed decision because I have studied ‘EU Law’ and the effects of it within the UK.
So, revision-pain aside, I know exactly why I chose to study law!
I hope you enjoyed this midnight, philosophical rambling of a post. If you have any questions about what it is like being a law student at the University of Leicester, please feel free to comment below.
Until next time,
Zara 🙂
