Following on from my previous post, I thought I’d share with you some thoughts on my first week studying at the Goethe University in Germany.
With the sun shining down on us during the past week, my ‘Summer of Knowledge’ has gotten off to a great start! We have already covered several topics, from Legal Transfer to the Protection of Human Rights and Minorities in Europe and the language of justification in the context of Human Rights Law. These classes have either introduced me to a topic which I’ve not come across before, or covered a subject I am familiar with from a different perspective. After having had a relaxing fiction-filled break in the wake of exam madness, I am really enjoying talking Law again!
Our knowledge intake for the day definitely doesn’t end when our classes are over. I have learnt a great deal from the other students about legal education and the legal systems of their home countries. It has brought to the fore that different countries approach the same problems in different ways which has, in turn, made me question why one approach may be favoured over another. In this way, the summer school has provoked a lot of discussion and reminded me of the importance of asking questions and being critical when studying Law.
The programme may be taking place in Frankfurt, but the international character of our group has meant that I am learning about legal systems from all around the world, at the same time as getting a taste for what it’s like to study at a University in a different country! Es ist fantastisch!
