Law Ball: A magical night

So, every year, the biggest night to look forward to is the Law Ball – it’s the biggest social event of the year for both law students and law academics alike. Each year is a different theme, which is purely for the entertainment and decor (no fancy dress allowed!). In my first year, it was Arabian Nights, last year we had Circus, and this year was A Night at the Movies, which I had the pleasure of helping to plan.

It’s a fun night of getting very drunk (if you do that sort of thing), eating, socialising, and dancing with your lecturers and tutors… and also watching them get drunk.

The night starts with you walking into the beautiful venue. You see friends who you didn’t get ready with, and everyone tells each other how beautiful they look (it’s a great ego-booster). You take as many pictures as you can with your beautiful friends and before you know it, you’re then ushered to your table. This is the moment everyone sees the main room, which has been meticulously designed and decorated by the Law Ball committee and the venue staff – imagine walking into a magical (also dark) room transformed into whatever the theme is that year. After you stare at the decor for a little bit, you rush straight to the bar or go straight for the dinner rolls because you haven’t eaten pretty much all day to save room for dinner. Even if you don’t love the food, you’re going to finish off that plate, because you’d better believe you paid for every last thing on there!

After some socialising with your friends at other tables (only if you have that many friends), the starter comes! You finish it off and by this time, you’re just ready to eat, so you wait patiently for the main course. In the meantime, the Law Society awards are going on onstage, and you chat with the people on either side of you, because those are the only people you can hear. Then, finally the main course arrives and you dig in – you’re absolutely determined to finish off your plate. At this point, the entertainment starts! In first year, we had belly dancers, in second year, we had acrobatics and fire performers, and this year we had the University of Leicester Big Band, who were brilliant.

After the entertainment finished their set, and you squeeze in a few more photos (including that iconic backdrop that everyone has from Law Ball), dessert has arrived. After scarfing down your dessert, the moment you’ve been waiting all night for – the dance floor begins! Scarlett and I had a habit of getting the dance floor started, and we’d boogie away until we couldn’t stand anymore. Every year there’s an after-party, which I’ve heard is a really good time – personally, I end up at the O2 at uni after swapping my heels out for trainers.

You can bring plus ones who don’t study law, so it’s just a good excuse to dress up and look fancy with your best mates. Law Ball is a fab night that everyone should experience at least once in their law degree!
