I have been in Leicester for almost two years. But I’ll never get used to staying away from home. The homesickness kicks in every once in a while. While there are many ways to battle homesickness, one of the many efficient ways is to make your dorm room feel like home. Here are my top tips to make yourself feel more at home after you come back to your room after a long, tiring day.
a) Photos and posters
Print and make a collage out of some your favourite photos of family and friends from back home. Pin them on the cork board in your room or stick them on the wall with some blu-tack. I also like to pin some posters with motivational quotes on the cork board. I have a little brother and he always makes me cute little drawings and cards when I go back home. I bring them with me and stick them around my room. All these things represent memories and seeing them around you all the time will help with that homesickness.
I like to get some of my old pillow covers and bed-sheets from back home. They not only look nice but also make my dorm room look a little more like my own room back home.
c) Organisation and decoration
You never want to come back to a messy room after a busy day at university. It is quite demotivating. Try and keep your room tidy and organised. A clutter free room is a clutter free mind! Decorate your room with things that make you happy. These could be your favourite books, posters of your beloved band, soft toys, a flower pot near your window. Absolutely anything that puts you in a joyful mood!
Keeping a few home-made goodies in your room is sure to cheer you up when you miss home a lot. Bring a tin of your Mum’s home-made cookies or cake with you when you come to university and relish the deliciousness.
I hope these helped a little. If you have more tips, please share them in the comment section below!
Peace out! 🙂
