It’s difficult to miss the advertisements and promotions in shop windows telling us that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Despite being in a relationship, I am slightly cynical about Valentine’s Day and feel that it is partially just a way for companies to sell us products with hearts on them. However, it is nice to get into the spirit of it and celebrate your loved ones. So here’s a round up of some things to do with you boyfriend, girlfriend or friends:
- Go for a romantic meal. Leicester has no shortage of great restaurants, from well-known chains like Zizzi and Café Rouge, to independent local restaurants such as OGGI Italian. Many of them will be offering set menus especially for Valentine’s Day if that’s what you’re in to. Some of my favourite restaurants in Leicester are Kayal, Crafty Burger and Peter Pizzeria.
- Watch a movie at the cinema. There’s a Showcase cinema in the Highcross and an Odeon in Freeman’s common, but if you want something a bit more special why not try the Phonenix? It’s an independent cinema and art centre in Leicester, showing a good variation of films and you can even buy a drink at the bar and relax in front of the movie with it.
- Have a laugh together at the Leicester Comedy Festival. Taking place in various venues around the city from the 7th-25th of February, there’s plenty of events happening on the 14th. Maybe not the most conventional romantic date but you’ll be sure to have fun. (Alternatively, if you’re single/hate Valentine’s Day, you can make yourself feel better by going to see Scarlet SoHandsome’s Valentine’s Day Massacre)
- Get merry at the Prosecco and Gin Festival. Coming to the Athena on the 16th and 17th, this will be perfect for those who love a glass of fizz.
I hope these suggestions are helpful if you’re stuck for the perfect Valentine’s date or if you just want to have fun with friends. Let me know if you have any other ideas!
