Last Sunday was the annual Leicester University Theatre (LUT) Oscars, in which awards are given to represent various accolades within the society. We all dressed up very smartly and headed down to the Belmont Hotel for the awards. The theme was masquerade so we were all asked to wear masks. I’m somewhat prolific within the society for not adhering to dress codes, but seeing as this was quite possibly my last ever social with them I thought I’d actually make the effort for once and splashed out a grand total of £2.69 (would’ve been £2.99 but I got 10% student discount!) on a mask which loosely resembled Batman. I got a fair few positive comments about it so felt rather Bruce Wayne-esque. I doubt I’ll find any opportunity to wear it again but I think it was worth it.
The awards ceremony went underway, being hosted by both the new and old presidents of the society, and beginning with a rather entertaining segment outlining how *not* to receive an award. Then the actual awards started, including the sexiest male and female, I was rather disappointed that my vote for the soon-to-be president as “sexiest female” for his cameo in Romeo and Juliet in drag didn’t come to fruition. There were also intermittent performances from “The Muses” – a joint effort from LUT and LUC (Leicester University Chorus). After some awards and my jokey “disgust” at some students from De Montfort University winning awards for their roles in the joint Demon Theatre and LUT production of Romeo and Juliet there was a break for food in which there was a buffet. Before it all continued and we rounded off the night with some lifetime contribution awards and many teary eyes before a band, fronted by a member of LUT, went up to perform.
All in all it was a very nice evening and I must admit I felt rather dapper in my suit, I feel the need to find as many occasions as possible now in which to don it and feel really smart.
