For my dissertation, I’ve decided to look at recreational drug use – specifically throughout the re-emerging ‘rave’ culture. I’m particularly interested as to whether individuals take drugs to relieve social anxieties in this rave scenario. The reason I chose this topic was purely because it surrounded me in one way or another and it interested my thought processes for both Sociology and Media.
Although my discipline is Sociology based, the Media aspect of my course should also fall into play here as I explore the media’s attitudes towards recreational drug use. Some might argue that the rave culture has re-emerged since it’s debut in the mid 1980’s and I want to examine the truth of this statement looking at modern social situations.
Another course mate recently brought an article based on anonymous drug taking to my attention, and I found it to be incredibly relevant. The piece discussed how speaking about drug taking has become so taboo and furthermore, how our society still decides to consciously sweep the topic under the carpet. I guess as part of my dissertation I want to bring this topic to light and pull it apart, piece by piece.
Considering drugs have become so abundant in today’s culture, I want to discuss them in a truly honest way. Drug taking has become a part of student life in many ways and it’s time to address this in an academic way.
