I am representing my year group as third year Course Rep, so I thought I would let you know what my role consists of in case your thinking of applying in the next academic year.
Each year the University holds elections for Course Reps, as part of the role you are there to represent students on the course with academic related issues. This allows you to give each student a “voice” for their course and an official route through which opinions and concerns can be raised.
What your roles includes:
Within semester 1 you will be given specialist training, informing you with more detail of what the role consists of. A key element of the role includes attending Student-Staff Committee meetings which are held in your department. During this meeting you discuss and give feedback on concerns the students might have related to specific modules on the course such as deadlines, lecture or seminar structures etc. You will also be invited to attend a lunch with the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and the Student Union Education Officer. Extra activities of the role also include attending workshops or volunteering opportunities that are on the Course Rep calendar.
How to apply:
All you need to do is write a short paragraph introducing yourself and explain why you believe you would make a great representative for your year group. After this students are asked to vote for which candidate they like, voting usually lasts for around a week, so it gives you plenty of time to introduce yourself to your classmates and inform them that you are running to be Course Rep.
Why you should apply:
By becoming a Course Rep is gives you the opportunity to build on your transferable skills that every employer looks for. The role allows you to take on more responsibility and become more involved in shaping your department, as you become a voice for students. Being a Course Rep will also enable you to earn awards and accreditations, which will give you a way to demonstrate your skills for employability.
Let me know if you plan on applying to becoming Course Rep next year!
