This month I attended the Careers in Media event by the Careers Development Service. It consisted of alumni’s from the university giving advice on how they have reached their current position in their career. This Alumni Networking Series was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the lessons that they have learned on their way to build a successful career.
At the Careers in Media event the alumni’s included a Media Planner, an Assistant Director of the Raindance Film Festival, a presenter and a Group Account Director for an advertising agency. This event opened my eyes to the many opportunities this degree can offer graduates.
The key advice from the event consisted of:
– Gain Experience: it becomes a great way to show potential employees that you have relevant experience in the area.
– Network: attend networking event as this gives you the chance to interact with professionals and gain advice.
– Be Persistent: don’t let an unsuccessful application denture you from applying to other opportunities. Also be persistent in checking up on whether the company has any opportunities for work experience/internship.
One thing I’ve never considered before is finding opportunities abroad. From this event two alumni explained how they looked for opportunities abroad in Texas and Malaysia, by emailing their CV to numerous companies. This is something I haven’t thought about before but is definitely something I will now consider.
As a heavily theoretical course, this careers event made me realise that my course allows for diverse employment opportunities.
