… Because, of course, he had a hole in one.
And with that, I can neatly segue into my latest adventure, which consisted of working at the Open Golf Tournament in Hoylake for the last week!
For those who don’t know/have other things to care about, the Open is an international tournament which tests the ability of men to hit a small, white ball into a hole with large metal sticks. As you can probably tell, this attracts a lot of excitement (and money!), which generates plenty of jobs for students, including myself. I had the glamorous role of supervising a litter picking team, made up of students from local schools – and by goodness, we kept that course clean.
One of the perks of the job was being around famous people all day, which made it difficult not to bump into them. Despite having had minimal interest in Golf before all of this, I did actually know who Tiger Woods was – He won the last tournament at Hoylake in 2006 (which I attended as a wee 12-year old), and of course was all over the papers a few years back for some less-than savoury activities. I also had a casual chat with another golfer, who later turned out to be Adam Scott, the World Number One. The moral of the story is do your homework before large sporting events.
Holidays at Uni are a great time to get involved in this, that and everything, as I’m finding out! Our first two summers at Leicester Medical School follow basically the same pattern as the rest of the University, which means they are really quite long. This year, my second, we’ve been given the entirety of July and August (generous, I know!) to recover from the intense information assimilation of Semesters Three & Four (two semesters worth of content per year).
This leaves plenty of time for activities which are usually prohibited by the busy term-time schedule. I’ve been involved in an audit back in Leicester (basically checking how well certain clinical procedures work in practice, and what changes can be made to improve them), which has been an excellent experience of clinical life, and had the opportunity to get involved in multiple summer jobs to earn a little money on the side.
It also gives you a great opportunity to travel abroad, which I’ll be doing in two weeks time. To be revealed..
Hope you’re all enjoying the sun – I’m off to the driving range!
