For the new freshers especially, but also all students who want to try some thing new -it’s still the start of the year so I would definitely recommend joining some societies. Leicester has multiple to choose from and most cater for both beginners and experts in whatever it is. Im going to list what I think are the 5 quirkiest societies at Leicester.
1) QUIDDITCH TEAM
“Yes we play quidditch, no we don’t fly”
-This sport is actually really active and looks super fun! And the novelty for Harry Potter fans is incredible. (They actually have broomsticks!)
“a fast-paced and energetic combat simulation game not dissimilar to paintball, but with heavier emphasis on teamwork, military strategy and sportsmanship”
-can’t say I’ve ever heard of aits port but it looks so cool! Very hardcore!
3) CURRY SOCIETY
This society literally samples Leicester’s curry houses and holds curry coolong sessions – which personally sounds like bliss! You’re definitely in the best UK city for curry that’s for sure.
“Parkour (or FreeRunning, or L’Art Du Displacement) is not just about flips and climbing on buildings, or even about getting from one place to another as quickly and efficiently as possible. It’s about knowing your environment, your body and your mind.”
For those of you that haven’t seen parkour, it’s so hardcore and cool! I’d recommend youtubing it. It’s the sort of thing that you would look at in awe of their talent but not think about joining. But this group says they can train anyone.
5) HOPE NOT HATE
“In the last decade, the rise of far-right, fascist, racist and xenophobic political groups, including the British National Party and the English Defence League, has become a major threat to our society. HOPE not hate was set up as a response to such groups in order to challenge their politics and promote a modern, diverse Britain.”
This is an interesting group which sounds really inspirational -getting involved with a group that is trying to make a positive impact is an amazing thing to do at uni!
I don’t personally belong to any of these groups, but I think they’re really cool! There’s lots more cool societies -whether it’s one of these or something else -joining some university of Leicester societies is a great way to spend your free time and make friends!
