Being a student at the university of Leicester is great for many different reasons. One of these is being immersed into the extremely multicultural environment of the city. This is particularly apparent at this time of the year, DIWALI. Leicester hosts the BIGGEST Diwali festival outside of India! There is always a big celebration in Crossington park on Belgrave road. The road is completely closed and there are lights everywhere. There’s also street stalls selling amazing Indian food, sweets and lots of light up merchandise! There are lots of performances and the night ends with the biggest attraction which is the firework display.
The Leicester University Asian Dance Society perform every year, and having performed the last two years with them, it was really strange being part of the audience this time round. However, it was quite nice to be able to just walk to Belgrave road at a leisurely time (not rushing to get backstage early) and to watch all of the other performances. Here is the link to the telegraphs article on the celebrations, with a video featuring the Asian dance society!
The fireworks were magical as always and the festive vibe was really nice. Can’t wait for next year!
