So during my travels, I’ve ended up in New Zealand for my lovely cousin’s 21st birthday party! I haven’t seen her in 7 years and we are very close! It has been amazing to see her after so long and also meet all of her friends.
It was interesting to speak to some of her friends who are medical students in New Zealand. In order to get into medicine there, you have to do one year of health sciences at university. It doesn’t require good grades to get into this course. However, of 2000 students from each university who do health sciences to enter medical school, 200 students get in! This is based solely on grades and a test similar to the UKCAT. There’s no interview, and you only have a chance to get into the university you are already at.
Although I believe our system of getting into medical school is increasingly difficult -I can imagine the stress of competing with all of your course mates, and I also believe interviews are very important -to show your true character. Not the conventional party conversation but it was interesting to compare the systems of different countries!
This 21st party was at her house and had a live band called “Jamie and the Jets” which was pretty cool! They set up outside and everyone was dancing it was very fun.
