I can safely say that I am enjoying being on placement a great amount. As great as pre-clinical medicine is, being on placement is just the most exciting and useful way to learn. It is inspiring as you feel so much closer to the end goal of becoming a doctor.
I have been placed at the De Montfort GP surgery. As a university surgery, it is extremely modern. I’m also very impressed at how specialised it is. I used to think that GPs just see a massive variety of problems, and many of them do. However, there are many GPs at the practice who have special interests, and therefore specialise in certain areas. For example, one GP sees most of the mental health patients, and one sees most of the sexual health patients. This means that the care is better for patients because the doctors are experts in that subject.
What has been surprising for me is the trust patients have in me. I’m just a medical student, yet patients have been so open and trusting of my opinions. I’m really excited to continue on this block for the next 5 weeks.
