The second bank holiday weekend in May brought one of my first ever experiences of holidaying in England… and it did not disappoint. It was so nice to get out of Leicester and spend some quality time with uni friends. Because I’m intercalating this year, and some of my friends aren’t, it means that we all have different term dates and therefore holidays. We decided ages ago that we really wanted to have some kind of holiday together but were struggling to find a time when everyone was free. So, we decided on one of the many bank holidays that we’re blessed with, praying for some good weather, seeing as it was May…
There were 12 of us altogether and no one particularly fancied organising a holiday abroad; getting us all to the airport, on a plane, and back again, without losing anyone, sounded like quite a mean feat. So, we decided on somewhere in England, purely for convenience and it meant that we didn’t have to spend too much time travelling. The next task was deciding on WHERE in England we wanted to go. Ideally, we wanted somewhere in the countryside and quite remote, so that we didn’t disturb anyone. By the sea would have been great and of course the no. 1 criteria: the house NEEDED to have a hot tub.
After about a week of visiting every single website that existed that you could rent a house from, we finally found the perfect one, hot tub and all! The house was in a place called Folkestone in Kent, down in the South East. We went down on the Friday afternoon, and stayed for 3 nights- the perfect amount of time for everyone to feel like they’d had a proper break. The house was AMAZING. It slept 12 people and had a big kitchen with a huge table for everyone, as well as a huge lounge and dining room, with another huge table that sat everyone. It had a beautiful garden, with lots of nice garden furniture to enjoy the weather. But honestly, the best bit was undoubtedly the hot tub. It wasn’t really supposed to but somehow, we managed to fit all 12 of us into it at the same time- needless to say the water level went down rather a lot over the weekend!
So, what did we get up to? Well to be honest, it was mainly drinking and sitting in the hot tub, but we also ate lots of good food and went out for a few walks! The area around where we were staying was beautiful and very close to the White Cliffs of Dover, which were incredible! However, very windy; we were definitely not dressed for the weather. Luckily the weather was pretty sunny for most of the weekend, which meant we got to spend most of our time outside. We had an amazing BBQ, as well as a cheese and wine night where everyone dressed up.
All in all, it was just so nice to go away as a big group, with lots of time to chat and catch up, and just relax! It was a weekend full of laughter and prosecco, what more could you want. It’s safe to say that my views on holidays in England have well and truly changed, I couldn’t recommend it enough!
