Almost five years have passed since I first arrived to Leicester. I excited, determined and a slightly bit worried about my abilities. But the University of Leicester embraced me and made sure that I will perform to the best of my abilities. And now, I am a Doctor of Philosophy (subject to minor amendments) or as the “official” announcement said:
“I am delighted to let you all know that today Pál Négyesi successfully defended his thesis — a fascinating and enormously significant 20th-century history of the auto museum and curatorial practices in Germany and Austria. Huge congratulations to Dr Négyesi and to supervisors Ross and Simon!”
I was super-anxious before my viva. Back at home I was restless, I just wanted to be in Leicester. So when I arrived on Sunday evening I spent that night and the subsequent day sleeping and relaxing. I even went to see an action movie. Afterwards I walked all over the campus, had a quick reassuring phone chat with my supervisor. I told myself: I came this far. It is a great achievement in itself, so anything happens, I am good.
So just as my supervisor predicted, the viva itself had a relaxing, reassuring atmosphere. It lasted around 80-90 minutes. And it is something, you should not be afraid of 🙂 It is easy for me to say it, but believe me, once you submitted your thesis, there is no need to worry any more.
So with this, I am bidding farewell to my readers and to the university. This has been a fantastic experience, I am very happy that I was given this opportunity by Professor Simon Knell. I will forever be grateful to Prof. Ross Parry – the best supervisor any student can wish for. And the School of Museum Studies is just a wonderful place to be.
Thank you!
