After the two days when Freshers Fair takes place lots of societies offer free taster sessions. It is usually the sports teams and dance societies that do tasters and it’s a great chance to decide what physical activity you might be interested in before you pay money to sign up to anything or commit. I am the kind of person that always wants to try something new and Leicester has so many unique societies and clubs that I wish I could join several, but honestly I don’t have the time to do that with my course.
The Pole Fitness and Dance Society held a meet and greet at dessert cafe Madisons before any sessions and it was a great chance to meet the very friendly committee and ask lots of questions about what pole dancing involves. Many of the non-sport societies hold meet and greets at the start of the year to introduce newcomers from all years – it’s not just freshers that join new societies.
The taster sessions were the week after the meet and greet and we were taught quite a few moves on the pole in only an hour. It didn’t matter what ability you were, everyone had a laugh and tried out all the spins. Since the taster session I went to I have now joined the society and hope to go to sessions every week to improving my strength and flexibility. Plus it’s really fun to do.
