There is a decent selection of different places to eat when you’re on campus at Leicester. There’s Delicious which sells a range of sandwiches, wraps, and snacks while Chi next door serves hot food which varies on different days of the week and there’s always a burrito bar. After a morning studying in the library, the library café is a great place to relax with a hot drink and a snack. All of these food places let you use an LE card. This is a card that you can top up in person or online so that you can pay for your food more quickly. The best place to use this is in Delicious since around lunch time it gets very busy and there are separate tills just for those with LE cards which can be very useful. The only downfall of the LE card is that you can’t use it on food in the student union.
The student union has its own sit down café but I’ve never been in it personally. Asides from that there is the “Food Market” which was just revamped this year. It’s a misleading name because really the Food Market is just half corner shop and half food court but the food is pretty good. They sell bagels and sandwiches, bubble tea and have a changing food station which sells food from different local businesses.
As a vegan it never really crossed my mind to think about that I could eat on campus at university – I automatically assumed that there wouldn’t be much but in fact there are quite a few options. Delicious has a whole section of vegetarian sandwiches including a vegan falafel and beetroot (nicer than it might sound) and there’s also a Subway-like system of picking a type of bread and whatever filling you like for it, which includes houmous and salad for vegans. There’s also the veggie burritos from Chi without the cheese and peanut butter and jam bagels in the SU. There’s also plenty of snacks in all of the food places.
I try to make my own lunch for uni as much as possible to try to save money but it’s good to have so much choice when you’re not as prepared as you should be. The physics department has a common room with a microwave and supply of boiling water which can be very helpful for hot lunches and offers a place to sit down and chat among other physics students and staff.
