Since I enjoyed my year of lessons at Pole Fitness & Dance Society so much, I decided that I’d like to try for a committee role. Every society at university has a student committee who run the society and aim to improve it over the academic year. The main roles are usually president: head of the society, treasurer: manages money in the society, and secretary: general admin for the society. In pole we also have the roles of social secretary: organises social events for society members, and publicity officer: promotes the society on social media and elsewhere. There is usually a vote among society members to decide who is on the committee in the following year but it’s well worth putting yourself forward because often only one or two people go for each role, so you’re likely to make it onto a committee by being brave enough to nominate yourself.
I decided to go for the secretary position which means my main duties will be sending out emails every week, keeping track of membership and updating the website. Being on the pole society committee also means that you have to teach lessons, which seems a bit daunting since I’ve only been doing pole myself since September, but I think it will be a good challenge and fun too. It’s nice to be getting more involved in a society that has been so welcoming and enjoyable and now I can give back to it. I think I will learn a lot being on a committee and I’m looking forward to September.

At the end of last term we had a pole fitness and dance showcase which I performed in. All of us in the showcase spent many weeks choreographing and practicing our routines with current president Iris and all the hard work paid off on the night, it was a lot of fun. Hopefully next year the society can be even bigger and better than this year. You can check out all the different societies that Leicester has on the student union website here and if there’s something missing that you think should be a society, you can create your own. The vegsoc and free from societies were just started this year (I’m sure along with many others) and it’s not so difficult to set up your own if you find a group of people interested in helping you start it up.
