For the past few years I have been listening to many podcasts and audio-books. I want to tell you why audio based content if fantastic and what some of my favorite podcasts are. Note that I did not mention radio, I don’t listen to radio for the same reason I don’t watch TV: I don’t want to have to adhere to a schedule to watch or listen to something (and I just know I won’t record it). If it’s not on demand, I’ll most likely never watch it.
There are many reasons I listen to podcasts and audio-books. For example I like going for long walks and a light-hearted podcast can make the walk that more pleasant. I think going for walks can be beneficial for your mental health (and your physical health too), and listening to a podcast can keep you entertained on your walk. I also listen to podcasts or audio-books whilst doing mundane tasks such as doing my washing or buying groceries.
I have found that there are two main reasons I find myself listening to audio-books. Firstly, whilst travelling; I have been doing a lot of couch journeys recently which can be over 3 hours so sticking on an audio-book can keep me entertained and make the journey feel a little shorter. The second circumstance I find myself listening to audio-books is simply when I can’t be bothered to read. This could be because I was just been reading and that part of my brain is tired, or for some reason I don’t fully understand I can’t be bothered.
I think listening to audio-books has really broadened the subject matter of the books I am listening to. Though I still mainly read non-fiction, I have started reading books in subjects I would not normally be interested in such as politics and history. I have also been able to listen to more recently published books than I normally would. Most paper books I own are from charity shops or bought second-hand online. This is simple because buying new books is expensive. However, with audible (where I get my online books from), I get one credit a month to use on any book I want regardless of its price.
If you are interested my favorite podcast are: Hello Internet, Cortex, The Wikicast, BONANZA, The Infinite Monkey Cage (slightly longer than the episodes broadcast on Radio 4), Titanium Physicists, and plenty more…
I may at the end of the summer do a review of some of the books I have read / listened to.
