By a surprising turn of events, it seems the Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore did go ahead! And with an agreement! After months of speculation and Trump’s own cancellation of the summit, it finally came to fruition with a historic handshake and a nod.
Why was the summit so important? Well, the summit was not only another chance for dialogue with the North Korean dictator, but it was the first meeting in history between the Kim Dynasty and a sitting U.S President! Never has the most powerful person in the world met with one of the most dangerous people in the world. What made the summit so significant was the fact that Trump and Kim had been trading verbal blows over social media and the news last year. The situation became so grim and unreal, several WW3 memes sprung up at the time. This morning, the two leaders stood side-by-side for photos.
Trump will certainly spend the remainder of his time in office coasting on his success in bringing Kim Jong Un to the negotiating table. We’ll definitely be seeing more tweets referring to it in the coming months every time the Mueller investigation seems to close in on Russian ‘collusion’.
Long term? The summit is mostly seen as symbolic, including the agreement. While Trump has claimed that good progress has been made, this is not the first time a North Korean leader has claimed to agree with denuclearisation, then shied away from further dialogue and continued to operate the ‘Hermit Kingdom’.
