So many deadlines this week! Another one getting close, it’s on Friday, and it’s the deadline for applications for the Summer Abroad Programme. The University of Leicester has partners in Korea, China and Taiwan, and offer summer experiences roughly 1 month long. Activities include taking part in classes on Korean culture (in English of course), but also day trips and general opportunities to explore the surroundings! Scholarships are available for certain students, e. g. First Years and students from specific departments.
I’m torn right now, because I applied last Year, and for some reason got rejected. I was really excited for it, I researched the universities and the cities and I was highly upset when they turned me down.
The thing is, I love to travel, it’s what has made my life worthwhile so far, and unfortunately Psychology doesn’t offer Year Abroad experiences as part of our course. The reason for it, as I was told, is that the British Psychological Society wouldn’t recognise the validity of the degree if part of it was achieved outside England. I find it highly unfair, considered how many subjects get to leave for no reason (I mean, a friend from last Year studying Maths got to go to America! Maths?!). I’ve tried discussing it with officers at the Student Union, and would happily fight for opportunities for future students. If the BPS doesn’t allow spending part of the core course abroad, a solution could be offering internships in our Fourth Year, but sponsored through the University! It would be so much easier to find opportunities with the support of the University.
Sorry for the rant, I get really passionate about the topic. Anyway, back to the point.
Since I’m in my second Year, I wouldn’t have access to a scholarship, but that’s not why I’m hesitating. Precisely because it’s gonna be the summer of my Second Year, maybe I should focus more on gaining experience related to my field, rather than general experience Abroad. It would be a great opportunity, but do I have the time for it…?
Well, I’m going to write my application, just in case, and on Friday I’ll decide what to do. But for every other student who doesn’t have to face these problems, here’s the website for the Summer Abroad opportunities! 🙂
