June 6th was the deadline to select our dissertation supervisors. Well, it doesn’t exactly work like that. By June 6th we had to pick 4 possible supervisors out of a list, and submit a request form.
The important thing about choosing a supervisor was talking to them. It is a process.
First we had three lectures dedicated to the introduction of (almost) every available supervisor, and their topics of preference. After that, it was important to get in contact with them individually to discuss options. You can book a meeting by getting directly in contact with them through email, everyone I talked to answered fairly quickly and was really helpful. I think the best idea though is to have face-to-face discussions: not only I found it to be really informative, and helped me get an idea of what my options were, but it definitely felt more personal! Lecturers don’t get much saying over the allocations (or so I’m told), but still, getting them to know you (at least your face!) and your idea, especially if it’s relevant to their field of research, surely doesn’t hurt!
I met with two of my four choices, because of time and of other reasons concerning the topics I might work on. I won’t say anything just yet, because I still don’t know what my dissertation will turn out to be: it mostly depends on my supervisor allocation!
See, the problem is that until I am assigned a supervisor, and discuss my possible research experiment with them, I can’t properly prepare over summer. Which is annoying, considering I have an incredible amount of free time and I’d love to get to work as soon as possible. Next year is going to be really stressful, and I would be happy to start preparing for it! I still have no idea when we’ll be assigned our supervisor, but I’ll let you guys know!
