So, the first week of my last ever (!) freshers’ fortnight is over and I’ve had a pretty good week (but I can’t believe I’ve been living in our new house for a week already!)
I went to the freshers’ fair at the beginning of the week, and made up for my lack of involvement in extracurricular activities over the last few years by joining the tennis society with my housemate and signing up to write for The Ripple. I’m a little worried that having extra commitments in my final year, on top of a dissertation, will be difficult, but then I think I’d rather have lots to juggle than leave university with regrets. No ragrets, amirite?
I do like the freshers’ fair at Leicester because it always feels like a lot of effort has gone into its planning and organisation, especially because it runs for two days. Also, the amount of free stuff you get given is great, especially the free pizza from dominos which was upped from a free slice to a whole pizza this year. Win. The poster fair is always my favourite part; the posters pretty much stay the same every year but going to the fair has become sort of a tradition in our house!
As well as the freshers’ fair this week there was the ‘taste of Leicestershire’ festival on Thursday and Friday where lots of local stores come to sell their food, local pubs sell local ales and local musicians come to play. Basically it’s a way to showcase that Leicestershire can be a wonderful place to the students who are new to the city and there’s lots of free food and drink involved. I was a bit sad that I didn’t get to spend much time there this year as I really enjoyed it last year. This was partly my fault though as I totally forgot about it on Thursday and only remembered it was on when I was rushing through campus on Friday!
I also went out a couple of times this week (obviously no to too many places mind you; I am an old third year after all!). My housemates and I went to the O2 on Monday but felt way out of place surrounded by freshers’ so decided to stick to the pub the next night. On Wednesday I went on a night out with tennis that turned into an impromptu bar crawl ending at Let’s Disko! If that wasn’t a planned night I’m excited to see what the socials have in store.
Anyway, I hope anyone who’s new the university has had a great first week. What societies has everyone signed up for? And what’s been your favourite part of the week? I’d love to know so let me know in the comments!
I hope everyone has a good second week next week, and welcome to Leicester! (or welcome back returners!)
