Now that I am fully settled in to second year, I look back at my first year and wish I had done so much differently!
It’s very common during first year to be very eager towards your studies, which is a very good thing. But what I wish I had done last year is split my time a lot wisely between my studies and ‘extra curricular’ activities.
If you want to try something out that you’ve not tried before, go for it! Go to all the society taster sessions and socials, it is a great way to explore new interests and meet new people. You never know where one taster session can lead…
Another thing I wish I had done during my first year is asked for help. University is very different to A-Levels and I don’t think I estimated correctly how big the jump actually was. But there are so many people that can help, especially with the academic side of things. There will be your personal tutor, lecturer convener, seminar convener, peer mentor and anyone else in the faculty. If someone you ask doesn’t know the answer, they will ask someone who does know. So help isn’t that far away…
