Easter seems to have come at an awkward time this year, so the term dates for Heidelberg don’t quite match up. Our second semester officially starts on the 14th April, so for the last 2 weeks I’ve been at home for the Easter holidays- just without the Easter. It’s been really nice to come home and relax for a while (plus my Mum has kindly filled my suitcase up with Easter eggs for my return to Germany) and I think that’s probably why I feel a bit apprehensive about going back.
It’s strange, because as the weather has got nicer in Germany and I’ve become more and more settled, I’ve loved living in Heidelberg more than ever. But my friends who are also on a year abroad are currently counting down the weeks until they return to England by this point- a couple of my friends only have 4 weeks left! So although I’m really looking forward to being back in Germany, it does feel a bit like I’m being sent into exile right now (ok ok I know I’m being a drama queen).
This is also the last time I’ve planned to come home before I finish my time in Germany, so I’m probably a bit nervous because I know I don’t have any more home visits to look forward to for a bit. And it’s also kind of thrown me that whilst most people I know started their second semesters in January/February, I still have yet to start mine! I feel a bit out of the loop I guess. My classes in Germany don’t officially end until the end of July, and I was planning to come home at the start of August but with the term papers I know I’ll still have to write, I’m anticipating that I’ll probably be coming home a bit later than that.
So it’s strange to be equal parts excited and scared to be going back to Germany! Also I have my wonderful 27 hour coach journey to look forward to, so I think I’ll be less nervous once I’m actually back. That being said, I’m excited to get back to Heidelberg; I’ve crammed my suitcase with all the books I’ll need for next semester, I have a supply of English sweets, I’ve bravely/stupidly decided to leave my huge winter coat in England, and I have a list of a few places I really want to visit before I come home and have started making plans for some trips. So I’m hoping that the second term will be just as exciting as the first one was…I’ll let you know!
