Really, any student should consider these five things, not just study abroad students but I feel that some of these are particularly useful if you are studying/travelling abroad!
1. Laptop – actually, a notebook:
I’m assuming every student would already have a laptop, but I have to say, lugging around my heavy laptop (not a fan of macs- sorry!) all day is breaking my bag and indeed my shoulder. So, finally, and this is something I wish i’d done since day one, I am investing in a small notebook style laptop. Everything I need in a smaller, lighter form- perfect when you’re having to bring it to class every day or indeed travelling long distances.
2. A good hand luggage suitcase:
Excited for my upcoming year abroad, I invested in a nice hand luggage sized suitcase earlier in the year. I bought a nice hard-shell, four wheeled case and my goodness it has made life so much easier when moving around with all of my stuff! Don’t underestimate how much easier life is with a four wheeled suitcase!
Phone cameras are decent enough, but sometimes a good- quality camera is what you want in order to capture those memories and moments you really don’t want to forget. Something I am planning on doing is investing in a polaroid camera and also a large photo album/ book and putting my collection of photos in there that I will be able to look back on in many many years!
4. Portable Charger:
I can’t stress this one enough. I cannot count the amount of times I’ve drained my phone battery when trying to navigate around Amsterdams very- similar looking roads on google maps- being able to whip out my portable charger makes life a whole lot easier. When you move to any new city I’m assuming you’ll need google maps so it will definitely come in handy! They’re so inexpensive, I got mine off Amazon for £4 and it’s still going after three years!
5. Plug adaptors:
This is obvious but definitely purchase these beforehand – not only will they be cheaper but it means you can recharge your phone, portable charger and notebook as soon as you arrive at your new accommodation and they’re bound to be cheaper if you buy online in advanced!
Be prepared and get what you need, especially expensive items, beforehand!
