Semana Santa (Easter) is now coming to an end and classes start again for me on Tuesday:( but I’ve had a really great break and explored many new places!
I went to Madrid for 4 days where I stayed with my friend and his family, his family were very welcoming and we ate some typical Spanish dishes together and spent time visiting famous landmarks such as the Reina Sofía museum.
After I took the 5h30min train to the South West of Spain to a city called Badajoz which is in the autonomous region of Extremadura and borders Portugal. I was really lucky to be invited by one of my Spanish friends which I’d met in Salamanca but had actually done her Erasmus in Leicester the year before!
I stayed with her family for 5 days and I got on really well with her siblings, mum and grandparents. We explored a lot, visiting Portugal which was a 10 minute drive! Mérida, the capital of Extremadura and Badajoz itself.
People underestimate Badajoz and Extremadura in general but it’s a beautiful region with lots of nature and palm trees:) also, the climate is very warm and Portugal is very close.
I really enjoyed my time in both families and I felt like I was with my own family, they were very welcoming and I was sad to leave them.
Many people do go home to their families during the holidays but I really do recommend doing what I did and immersing yourself fully into the Spanish way of life.
